I know it’s not a fair comparison, but last Sunday in Millennium Park in Chicago, I was doing just that. It was a beautiful autumn day, crisp and cool. I had been to this Anish Kapoor sculpture before (Cloud Gate), but it had never been so busy. Throngs of people, I swear. All either as part of a wedding party or doing the ‘I love my Toyota’ jump in front of The Bean as it’s called. A fun place to be. And 200′ to the east was a tubular and stainless sheeted structure looming in the background. Frank Gehrys Pritzker Pavilion is a lovely piece of architecture to be sure. But it was empty. Especially compared to the 100 ton Bean. Of course, this is not fair as they are two completely different structures and types of art with different purposes. Of course the Pritzker Pavilion can hold many times the number of people to enjoy a classical symphony. But that Bean will always have a big crowd even against the draw of a live show. The city of Chicago made Anish Kapoor swear that Cloud Gate would last 1000 years. It will have kids of all ages mugging at themselves for at least that long. I love public art.
